"Clearances"

Inspired by "Clearances", by Seamus Heaney, in "Room to Rhyme" (2004, The University of Dundee Press). The "thwack" of Ulster linen being a sound familiar to me, from my own childhood, I readily identified with Heaney's association between his mother and this sound, as together they folded sheets, fresh in off the line. Few words seemed necessary as materials with which to evoke the mood of this beautiful poem, written in memory of her, except to link the words "mother" and "son" by means of a chord that reaches from his room, housed within hers.
