"The Self-Unseeing"

Inspired by a poem of the same name, by Thomas Hardy. Quoted in "Room to Rhyme" by Seamus Heaney (2004, The University of Dundee). I was commissioned, in 2004, to illustrate a publication of the text of a speech, given by Seamus Heaney to graduating students of the University of Dundee, "Room to Rhyme". As well as his own poems, Heaney quotes from others, such as Hardy and this poem, in particular, seemed pivotal to the development of a thread that I saw running through his speech, concerning the development of the creative muse and the necessary movement through and then away from the influences of mother and father (represented in this piece) and towards the emerging self as being the very 'ore' of this process.
