"Random Thoughts"

Whilst spending a spell as an artist in residence in Cromarty, on The Black Isle (courtesy of The Cromarty Trust) I worked in an renovated game store, between the main house and stables and out on a limb from the village itself. Much like I imagine being in limbo might feel (were I so inclined), I felt somehow suspended - lonely, yet comfortable in that state - out with the relative comfort zone of my studio. The form of the hut, containing both delicate and menacing elements, was made as a reaction to this and my decision to link this with my (later) experience of the poem, encountered whilst on retreat, deep in the Trossachs, became a bridge of sorts, between these two very different, yet similarly felt, experinces. Inspired by a poem by Japanese poet, Rengetsu, in the collection "Lotus Moon" translated by John Stevens, published by White Pine Press: www.whitepine.org./
