"The Lover"

Illustration for "Epistle to Davie" by Robert Burns, in "For A' That: A Celebration of Burns" (2009, The University of Dundee Press). Inspired by the ways in which Burns tended to view romantic love as a spiritual salve, as described in his "Epistle to Davie"

When heart-corroding care and greif
Deprive my sould of rest,
Her dear idea brings relief
And solace to my breast.

This piece can also be seen as an exploration of just one of the many labels that Burns has come to be identified with, in this case "The Lover", made using collage, on layers of translucent tissue, over a portrait of the poet, framed by a rose petal, also incorporates a quotation from his poem "The Highland Lassie"
