"Seven Changes"

Inspired by a haiku by Bairyu, in Japanese Death Poems (ed. Yoel Hoffmann) published by Charles E. Tuttle and Co. Ltd.)

O, hydrangea
You change and change
back to your primal colour

This painting came after a great deal of looking, of noticing the changes to the petals of these flowers as time passes and how they appear to return to themselves, somehow. The layering of gesso and shellac, as a support to the painting, allowed me to almost 'engrave' some drawings into the background, to symbolise the sense of a life-cycle at work.
