"Spared"

Inspired by a prose poem, 'Gift 2', by Kathleen Jamie in 'Frissure' (Polygon, 2013).

"Noticing the effect of landscape on the psyche, I began to consider those patients who had been 'observed' by the surgeon-artists whose medical illustrations Kathleen ands I and viewed together at Surgeon's Hall, in Edinburgh.

That some of this people had survived, while many more did not, is very affecting. I recalled how colours become more vivid and the tone of everything exaggerated when one has experienced loss."
